POLICE COURT.— Wednesday.

(Before T. Beokham, E»q., B.M.] DBTTNKBNNESS. William B. Ellis, Patrick Lyons, William Stone, and Catherine Douglas were punished as usual for drunkenness. John Hannigan was sentenced to seven days' additional imprisonment, being his third offence.

ROBBERY FROM THE PERSON, John Hayward and Stephen Spencer, privates of the Royal Artillery, were charged with stealing a watch from William Head. Both prisoners pleaded not guilty. William Head, prosecutor, an old man, deposed that he was a labourer at Panmure. Between twelve and one o'clock on Wednesday morning he was coming along a street in Auckland, when he met the two prisoners. Hayward seized him by the breast, threw him on the ground, and took his Watch. Witness kept,, the chain. Witness cried "Robbery," and constable Bell came up. (Watch* identified. ) The value of the watch was £6 10s. Mary Parr deposed that she lived in Elliott-street. This morning, between twelve and one o'clock,tuere was a noise in the next house, and witness got up to see what was the matter. In a few_miuutes, she saw the" two prisoners come up the street with the prosecutor. They went as far as the corner of Wellesley-street, and in about five minutes after they came back, when witness heard prosecutor tell constable Bell that the prisoners had robbed him. The prisoners then ran away along Elliott-street. The policeman, the prosecutor, and witness came to the corner of the Union Bank, where they met the met the prisoners again, bpencer there would have struck witness had not a policeman prevented him. Several policemen came up, and the prisoners were taken into custody. Constable Bell deposed that between twelve and one this morning he went into Elliott-street, and saw a number of persons standing near the last witness's house. Witness saw the prosecutor come up walking between the two prisoners. Witness spoke to them. The three then went in the direction of Wellesley-street. In about five minutes afterwards they returned, when I again warned them that they had better leave the streets. Prosecutor then informed witness that the prisoners had robbed him of his watch. The prisoners, on hearing that, ran away, when witness immediately followed them. He made up to them at the corner of Elliot street and asked them what they ran away for. They said, " Oh, nothing !" At that moment witness saw Hayward throw the watch into a hollow at the corner of Elliott-street. Another constable came up, and prisoners were taken to the lock-up. Witness then returned to the spot where the prisoners had been apprehended, and searched the hollow where Hayward had thrown the watch. Constable Terna^an picked it up. Prisoners were committed for trial for robbery from the person.
