THE BATH-STONE MASONS' STRIKE.
To lh« Editor of tKe'DAiLY Southern Cnosa. Sir, —In your i<«sue of the 12tU iusoaut yoa have a - paragraph ia rcf ereuce to the strike of ths Bath-~ ' stone masons, lately employed at the uew Supreme' Court-house, which places us in a false posuiou ia th« eyes of the public, and likewise of (he Aucklaad contractors; and as such paragraph contains many . miistateineuti of fact*, will you allow us to' make those corrections necessary to place our true position?, before the public? On Friday week last, [a deputation waited on the Foreman of Works, aud respectfully solicited a. riie or wages, usually and hitherto paid to freestone masons , of this towu, giving the contractors ample , time to take our requisition into consideration. ; aud ' an unfavourable answer 'being returned, the 'Bathatone masons consulted together, when they agreed ' to suspend operations. . . , << • ' Such paragraph also states that all the masons > were paid 10s. per day. True, But it doei not tell' the public that two of the masons there employed were paid 12s. per day. This, sir, is another; grievance of which we have to complain, as no>< skilled workman likes to work for leu than that obtained by auy other. ;. ' ' Auother reason stated < for not complying with - ourjwishes is that we did not make the sane demands on other contractors. Our rej.ly it that no other contractor in Auckland has similar . work ou baud, and consequently no other contractor requires that particular olaas of workmen ; and, moreover^' we think . we are justified in saying that the' Auckland contractors are willing to give th« wages we now solicit. , ",';_ " Allow us further to say that no attempt has been , made to withdraw the scoria masons from that orauy other job. " :i In regard to the erection of *heds at the cost ot \ Messrs. Amos and Taylor, we beg t« fctat* that it ir~ to those gentlemen's interests alone that they haye 1 done so. ', ( . i ' ; Trusting you will give this insertion in your widely-chculated journal — J am, 4c, ■ i. '»- 'i On behalf of the workmen, Masonic. Auckland, July 12, 1866.
