since which date Captain Hamblin has considerably increased his take, having on board 900 barrels sperm oil, 750 barrels black oil, aud about 6001b. whale- ] bone. In whaling news the month is particularly barren, as we have no arrivals, and only two departures to repot t, beyond the arrival of an American whaler, as reported below. ' Neither have we had any news of the whalers at se"a, beyond the fact that the Runnymede, that sailed on the 28th December, was fast to a. whale a few days after beatiug out, but unfortunately failed to kill. The Offiey, the second departure, is only recently fitted out as a whaler, the news of the high price of oil having giving an impetiui to our whaling trade.— HobartTovm Mercury, January 23. The Steamship City op Launceston. — The contract for raising the City of Launceston of Mr. Gibbins at £5,000 odd has been accepted. O'Neil, the former contractor, tendered at £6,000. Some talk is being made of using eight 36-feet boilers in the raising, by placing four each side, sinking them and then pumping the water out. Nothing as yet has been done, preparations only being made. It is said the vessel has sunk some two feet in the mud. — Examiner. Wreck on the West Coast. — Mr. Cooper, contractor, who returned to Wellington last evening by Cobbs coach, informs us that a vessel has beea wrecked at Manawatu, and he has kindly furnished us with following information in connection with the matter. It appears that on Monday morning the hull of a cutter or ketch was found on the beach within about two miles of the Manawatu river. The vessel was about fifteen tons burden, and on a board picked up were found the words ' Esther of Nelson,' and in the hull the dead body of a man was discovered. The wreck was above the high- water mark, and her deck and mast or masts were completely gone. The wreck must have occurred during the S. B. gale which blew with great violence on Sunday night, as there was no appearance of it there on that day. An inquest on the body of the man found in the vessel was to be held yesterday morn ing at Manawatu. — Wellington Advertiser, Feb. 14.
