Amono the most important of the events that has happened here is the discontinuance of Government lations to the Colonial Government einpuy fies. This actions seems to have caused satisfaction to nil parties concerned, as it will tend to encourage trade heie. The erection of two or three more shops is contemplated. The other clay the new Bank of New Zealand was opened under the management of our old and respected friend Mr. Hume. '1 his gentleman has conducted the business of the Bank of New Zealand ever since it was opened in the Waikato, and since that time has earned for himself an enviable reputation for hospitality, courtesy, &.c. I trust that he willlecouie a permanent settler amongst iiS. The building itself is neatly fitted up with every convenience for carrying on banking business. I wish it all success. The ' Pioneer' steamer made a tiial tiip the other day to Cambridge on the Horotiu, and I am glfid to saj' succeeded in reaching that place safely, returning the follow v.<* day. I ' believe she mstained some damage, though not much, although the tiip must have been quite enough for her as she remained alongside the bank here for upwaids of a week afterwards ; no doubt taking a breathing time before making another start. Suiely the Government can find something else for their steamers to do at these time besides lying alongside a bank as an ornament. We »re gradually approaching nearer civilization, as you will see by the fact of there being added to the number of our public establishments, a pound foi tho reception of stray horses, &c, found about camp, I suppose the fines, &c. (which are ss. for every animal found in cam])), are added to the public revenue, veiifying the old adage, "That every little helps." Major Yon Tempsky, of the Forest Rangers, passed through here to-day en route for Ngaliinapouii, for the purpose of making arrangements for the location of his men. I believe that both he and his men expressed a wish rathar to proceed to the scene of hostilities tbau settle on their land ; they are tally a body of men deserving the gratitude of the whole colony. The weather is still very fine and likely to lenmin so.
