THE VOLUNTEERS AND MILITIA.
The Militia and Volunteers who vere ordered np to Wairoa encamped at Papakura last nigut, not being able to reach their destination, befoie nightfall. They Arerc to start for Wairoa this morning. Ninety Volunteers left Auckland yesterday morning about half-past 10 o'clock, for duty at Otahuhu They had tho Volunteer band playing befoie them, and they appeared to be a smart-looking lot of felloes. Eighty more are Avarncd to hold themselves m readiness to start this morning. A Eifle Volunteer company, under the title of " the North Head Volunteer Corps, " has been formed at the North shore, for the defence of the district lying between the North Bead and Stanley Point on the Waitemata, and tho Southern boundry of Pateona's pah The corps consists of about 50 members, and 30 stand of arms, and 1,400 rounds of ammunition have been supplied for their use by the Government. The arms v, ere distributed on Tuesday, on which day the members were s-norn in. The following oil! ceis have been elected by the corps, G. J~. E, Wynyard to be Captain. , IT. B. Franklyn to be Lieutenant ; George Banks and Alexander Alison to be sergeants; two corporals Avere also elected. The gunboat ' Caroline ' sailed yesterday evening on service, the nature of which did not ti.inspne. Sixteen men from the Naval Volunr teers were to go in her, under command of Captain Daldy, and thirteen were to go this day mMr Chamberlm's yacht, which Avas placed by that gentleman at the service of the GoA-ern ment The service upon Avhich they will be employed aa ill extend over some few days. Upwards of one hundred summonses havo been issued against persons liable to serve as fir^t class militiamen, Avho have neglected to give m their name, age, and place of residence to the Mlhlia Office. Fifty cases AVillbe heard on Monday, and the remainder on Tuesday next, at the Police Court, before the Resident Magistrate.
