WANGAREI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Srspiciors Cv*n. —A nathe, known by Hip name of' Mohi, who lives near Parua Bay. (the same who stole a cow from a neighbour of his, and sold it to Mr. J)en(, in December last), brought a young straw beriy bullock to Wangarei the other day for sale. It seems that Mr. John Munro, near whom Mohi resides, lost several calves lately, which lie believed were taken by this native, and his brother Hat a. and having heard that Mohi had taken up the river a beast of the same age, and c\actly resembling one of those he 10->(, lie wrote to a friend to learn if it had been sold and to whom. It was at once ascertained that Mohi had sold it to a settler there for four pounds fifteen shillings, and thai ho had told the purchaser at the time that he should hai c taken it to Mr. I>ent but that lie (Mohi) owed him money. "What further steps will be taken cannot bo known until Mr. M unro investigates, the matter. Cows CitOKijn ny Potvioks. —Mr. "W. Wrack, farmer here, lost a -valuable dairy cow the other day. in consequence of a potaloe having lodged at the root of her tongue. Ft seems she had inadvertently been allowed access to the potatoe shed and wa?> helping herself, when it was immediately found tli.it a potato had become fast in her throat, after somo trouble this was forced over, but still she appeared choking, aitd much distressed, and as nothing could be done apparently to relieve her, Mr. Wrack had her killed. It was then found that a large potatoe had lodged at the root of her tongue, which no efforts of her own had been able to remove, and which he had not discovered. This is a considerable loss to Mr. W. as her beef did not realise nearly her value as a milker. Several cases of cows choked by potatoes have occurred here lately.
