INDIA.
Ceylon and India were united by electric telegraph on the Ist November, thus establishing communication between Calcutta, Madras, Bombay, and Point de Galle. The British arms have been very successful in Oude. The rebels were defeated on every occasion with great loss. At Sindiva 10,000 were utterly defeated. The loss on the side of the British being trifling. At Gwalior 5000 were defeated. The campaign is to be again opened in November. Sir Colin Campbell is at present in Allahabad. Troops are arriving steadily from England.
Allahabad, 30th October. Tantia Topee left Jubbulpore on 16th October, and made a flank march on Sindway. General Michel marched ten miles during the night, taking them by surprise in the morning, slaying 400, and capturing their guns.
Calcutta, October 30th. The proclamation announcing the Queen's assumption of sovereignty is received, and is to be promulgated with much ceremony on Ist November.
CHINA Hongkong, October 30th. Lord Elgin is still in treaty. Opium is to be admitted as an import. The duty is to be fixed by the Chinese. It is reported that the Emperor of Janan is dead.
SHANGHAI. Exports from the Westward coming forward freely. Amotrat of shipping in Chinese waters, still rery great, nearly 200,000 tons.
