ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAIL.
On Christmas day, in the forenoon, onr English October mails arrived in the Manukau. The Lord Woraley brought them ; 3nd, by the courtesy of the gentlemen connected with the Steam service, we were in receipt, on Saturday, of t les up to the 15th inst. — the day of the Lord Worsley's sailing Considering that our mails reached us, via Nelson and Taranaki, in barely ten days, including detention at both of the above ports, we have do cause to complain of delay in their transmission, from any fault of the steamer or its captain ; but have great reason to deplore the great loss sustained by Auckland in not getting the first advantage of speedy communication between New Zealand and the neighbouring colonies Every- time that otir subsidized steamers make a good trip, under the present system, we shall be inclined to say, '*"' sic not non nobis meli/icamus-apes ! See Supplemtnt.
(Continued from page 3.) "We gave last week a short summary of the English news received by the 'European, and in this day's issue will be found further particulars and extracts. The news is on the whole rather devoid of interest, but if unimportant news is akin to no news we may congratulate ourselves, according to the old adage, that the October news is "good." Sydney and Melbourne seem to be too busy with the receipt of the mail and the closing of the return one to originate any local topics of interest.
We are fnformed that Mr. Sewell, who is still a member of the Executive Council, is shortly expected in the Colony, being, in all probability, at Melbourne.
