AMATEUR PERFORMANCE.

To the Editor of the Southern Cross. Sir, — I beg leave to enclose a statement *of accounts connected with the last amateur performance foi the purpose of increasing the fund for a Monument to our fallen soklicis. lam requested to express a hope that the people of the Province of Auckland, .and particularly the old settlers, will not permit this truly patriotic object to be forgotten, but that immediate and active steps will 1 c taken, so as to increase the sum already collected (by say five shilling subscriptions) to the estimated amount, £300, required to erect a suitable testimonial to the memory of our brave defenders. I am, &c, The Acting Manager.

Note. — The last performance produced £19 ss. Od more than the present one— and as the expenses were £24 2s. 3d. more than on thafoccasion, the sum of £43 7s. 3d. would have been added to the fund t>y this performance if the circumstances had been similar to the last, and that greater care had been taken by those whose duty it was to receive the tickets at the doors.

Leon de Laville, \ . .. (IWB Arthur S. Ormsby. } Audltore - Received three pounds eight shillings and three pence towards the National Monument Fund, thus makinglthe total sum contributed by the Auckland Dramatic Amateurs for the above object, fortysix pounds nine shillings and thiee pence— (£46 9 3). R. H. Wtntaro, Colonel. Note. — The items marked thus * wore gratuitous on the occasion of the last performance, and the charges marked thus ** not incurred.

To the Editor of Ihe Southern Crocs. Sir, — Pardon my inquisitiveness, but I wish to ask the Superintendent, through your journal, will he be kind enough to inform the people, whether he received a certificate from Tom Murphy, Esq., setting forth bis qualification as road inspector, when men of unquestionable ability are not appreciated, on account of their political creed. If the " Soul of Honour '' will not, perhaps "Tom" himself will tell us what he knows of road making, to warrant him accepting the office, for the small matter of £250 per annum out of the public purse. Yours, &c. Vox Populi. Maroh 30, 1857.

To the Editor of the Southern Cross. Sir.— Ought not the Superintendent of Public Worka to ascertain how this worft is being done — the stones are too small — some of them not more than two pounds weight, with rotten stones and lumps of clay thrown in. The work ought not to be passed by the Government until the supervisor has ascertained that it is according to specification. I am, Sir, Keay.

To Dr. Pollen, per favour of the 'Southern Cross.' Sir,— ln the 'New Zealander' of the 18th instant, it i 6 stated that at the last meeting of the Fund Committee "you quietly handed over to the Rev. T. Hamer, a paper showing that Mr. Vaile's largesse had been advertised." By informing me in what "paper it has been advertised," you will oblige Your obedient servant, i (Jeokge Ymle,
