THE GOVERNMENT SMASH.

To the Editor of tht Smithern Cross. Sir,— Although the Provincial Law Officer did hisutmost to entrap the Speaker into committing an error, until every stranger present felt the indecency of such pioceedings, he succeeded not in gaining his point, but only earned the reputa ion of being a sort of unsuccessful political Jeremy Diddler. I can only liken the Government to Mr. Micawber, who always hoped something would "turn up." * * The Superintendent's policy is at once peunle and ludicrous. He thinks he can frighten some electors, hopes to cajole other*., and tries to take the rest by storm —at least his newspaper shows th^se are his intentions. He wishes to frighten the shareholders of the Wonga Wonga ; he throws a sly sop to the supporters of Nova Scotian immigration. After which comes such melancholy anticipations of impossibilities— such italicised warnings and thunderings, that any man not actually a fool will at once see that he must have caught some exiled penny-a-liner to do the pathetic and tragic for the Government organ. The Government are acting like a certain class of insoh cn ts or bankrupts. They have made a " smash.'" and dread being '• white washed," which they can only become by appealing to the country, and they full well know the response such an appeal -would call forth. Yours, &c Playful Pur. February 9, 1857.

To the Editor of the Southern Cross. Sis,— -I obserre that his Honor the Superintendent has appointed '• Mr. John Thomas Berig/ood. jun.," of Waimate, to act in the capacity of Registrar ot Brands, for the Northern Cattle District, vice William Bartley, Esq., resigned. Will you be good enough to inform me who •' Mr. John Thomas Bedggood, jun.," of Waimate, is ; as I know of no such person in Waimate. Querist. February 7, 1857. [Nor do we either.]
