Friday, August 31. The House met pursuant to adjournment. Reply to Addrtsi. The Spbaker announced that, in company with Messrs. Connell and Gilfillan, he had that morning presented the reply to his Honor's address. ' His Honor had intimated his intention of sending the Council a. written reply. j Messages from the Superintendent. ' The Speaker read the following message from his Honor the Superintendent. No. 12 — Haying reference to the Assistant Treasury Clerk heing styled in future the Audit Clerk. Harbour Land Act. Mr. Powditch's motion for leave to hring in a Bill to amend the "Harbour Land Act" lapsed, from the absence of the hon. member. Petition of John Makepeace. Mr. A. O'Neill, pursuant to notice, rose to n.ove " That the petition presented from Mr. John Makepeace be printed. Alteration in Standing Pules. Mr. Gilfillan, pursuant to notice, rose to move "That Standing Rules No. 35 and No. 83 be referred to the Com mittee on Standing Rules and Orders, with the view of such alterations therein being considered as shall tend to promote the despatch of business by the Council. Agreed to. Mr. Boylan, pursuant to notice, rose to move " Tha( the petition presented by him from 74 discharged noncommissioned officers and soldiers be referred to a Select Conynittee, consisting of Messrs. Whitaker, J. O'Neill, Bus^y, Dignan, and the mover." Agreed to. Erection of a Dead House. Mr. Gilfillan, with leave of the Council, presented » petition from the hotel keepers of Auckland, praying the Council to errct a Dead House. Received. Finance Report. Mr. Gilfillax, pursuant to notice, tOke to move "Thai clause 9 of the Report of the Finance Committee, be communicated to his Honor, as having been adopted as a Resolution of the Council." Agreed to. 4 Appropriation Bill. The Council resolved itself into a Committee, for the 'consideration of the estimates. Superintendent's Department. Audit Clerk, £250. Mr. Gilfillan moved, as an amendment, that the salary of the Audit Clerk be £300. Agreed to. Waste Land Board. Chief Commissioner, also Commissioner of Crown Lands, £400. Mr. A. O'Neill moved, as an amendment, that the salary of that o<hcer be £300. The Council divided on the amendment Ayes : Messrs. Clark, Dignan, Busby, Williamson, Newman, Hill, Lewis, Brennan, A. O'Neill, Derrom, Donovan, OBrien, Dilworth — 13. Noes : Messrs. Boylan, Taylor, Gilfillan — 3. Second Commissioner, £300 — Agreed to. --Surveyor, £<100. Mr. Donovan moved, as an amendment, that the salary of this officer be £300. Original motion carried : Ayes 12 ; Noes 4. Draftsman, £250. Mr. A. O'Neill moved, as an amendment, that the salary of this officer be £300. ■ Amendment carried . Clerk and Engrossing Clerk, £2JO each . Consideration postponed. Mr. Drkrom proposed to substitute £50, which was negatived. New Boat £50. An amendment to substitute £75 was proposed and ; negatived. Harbour Department, Russell. Harbour Master (also snb-collector of Customs), £30 Voted, no amount having been filled in. Coxswain, at £8 per month, £96.— Agreed to. Two Boatmen, at £7 per month each, .Cl6B. Mr. Busby moved, as an amendment, that this item be altered to one boatman, at £7 per month, £84. Amendment agreed to. Native Boatman, at £6 10s. per month, £78. Negatived. Contingencies, repairs of boat, Ac, £'20. Mr. Clarke moved, as an amendment, that this item be increased to £30. Amendment agreed to. Harbour Departmtnt Hokianga, Pilot, £48. Mr. Busby moved thiit this item be increased to £60. Amendment agreed to. Mr. Boylan then moved that the Chairman do report progress, and ask leave to sit again on Monday, at three o'clock. Agreed to. The Speaker having resumed the chair, the proceedings of the Committee were affirmed, and the Council adjourned till Monday, at 3 o'clock.
