MORE DETRACTION.

The ' New-Zealander/ amidst a shower of vituperative epithcti, which it is not worth our while to quote, bases a grave charge upon the Superintendent having issued the disallowance of the City Election, on the 24th March, the Law Officer's opinion being dated the 26th, and calls it an attempt " to bolster up his (Superintendent's) illegal proceeding*/' and even tries to daninge the professional reputation of the Law Officer, by im—'plicating him with wlia^ is-held up as a trick. The question of date enn be disposed of at once by the following letter which we have been re quested to publish :—: — Princes-street, Auckland, March 2G, 1855. Sir, — I have the honour to transmit herewith, in compliance with the request of your Honour, my opinion in writing as to the legality of the late election that took place in this city for the purpose of electing persons to serve as members of the City Council, which opinion I had the honour of communicating to you veibally on Thursday last the 22nd inst. I am, Sir, Your Honour's obedient servant, Singleton Rocnroun Provincial Lzw Officer. His Honour the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland. Happily this matter is very easily an'l satisfac set at rest, but. it does nut follow that every gross libel — that every defamation of character — that every insult to the Government and to the people of the Province living under such a Government, can be so readily disposed of, and the defaraer held up to public scorn. The time see^is fast approaching when a serious question will come to be mooted as to the support wh'ch a religious body should meet with, who are openly in communion with the person who thus continuously exerts his energies to destroy private reputation — to destroy the character of the Goernment — by false charges and dishonest insinuations. It is found that honesty is here no proof against detraction and vilification; and so longas falsehoods, backed up with the influence of a religious body, are thus permitted to circulate, there is no man of character safe nor is there any Government proof against them. * We need not mince the matter, and may say at once that utftil the Wesley an body take the proper means of disconnecting themselves from the infamous conduct to which we now and have lately been exposing, they will be jnstly held up as aiders and abettors therein

We beg to call the attention of the owners of stock to the Slaughter House* returns of cattle filled, which are now being regularly published in the 'Gazette.' The importance of these returns will be duly appreciated by all owners of stock ; but they wi 1 also afford much valuable statistical information. On looking over the return for the week 1 ending 19th insfc,, we aje surprised to find that,

out of rhe 42 head of cattle slaughtered, there are no less than 19 stated to have "no brands." Th ; s appears to us to indicate a necessity for some enactment to compel the branding of all cattle; without sm-h marks, the duties of the Inspector would be of little use, as he could not otherwise ascertain the ownership.
