THE FALLEN CAUSE.

To th* Editor of the Southern Crost. Sir,— This is to the memory of Old Officialism, who iftor having for six weeks enduied the ravages of that dire calamity, \iz., Excitement extraordinary, became defunct, through the ipse dixit ot an important functionaiy of tic City of Auckland, on 14th March, 18-55, the quo loarrranto for the sa no, having been signed by the majority of inhabitants of the Province thereof. This loss is much regretted by the few, I do not believe in cauterizing old sores, but as leference was made by a correspondent of last Saturday' s|issue, as to the deshes evinced by you and your "correspondents to prop if possible a nearly helpless and fallen came," I have been constrained (for the sake of humanity) to present to their longing eyes snd aching hearts all that is left of the real " fallen cause," that by rallying round the dead stock, perad venture some miraculous touch might bring to life the departed ''all gone to rot in chaos." In the meantime I must confess that I am at a loss to understand such misrepresented trash. I would ask any man of common sense or reason, avvarding, of course, justice to all, has the present Superintendent had fair play ? or in other words, does it follow because a new vessel is launched, and she is unfortunate enough to meet with a mutinous crew, to work her, that she is not seaworthy, or her captain unskilful ? No. But it must inevitably follow, and depend upon it, ("invisibilia non deeipiunt)" the more speedy the hands are driven in the work of the old vessel, or its commander, the sooner will the affairs of this Province wear » brighter aspect. Yours, &c, Picayt/nb. May 23, 1855.
