H. M. brig-sloop ' Fantome,' Ciptain Gennyr, cure into port in the cour»e of Tuesday afternoon, having been ten days on her panage from Sydney. The ' Fantorae' is a fine sightly brig, of Sir Wm. Symonds construction; of similar force and capacity to the ihip-aloop ' Fly' the relieves, and which bat been for nearly the last four years almost continuously on the New Zealand station. There are two old acquaintances cf our townsfolk among the officers of ibe brig — .?raely, Mr. Polkinghornr, her muter, and Mr. Iheker, clerk, both formeily of our indefatigable cruiser 'Calliope.' The 'Fly,' we beliere, was prevented through streis of weatber from sailing yesterday; she will, however, in all probability, take her final departure in the course of this day. In bidding her adieu, we can only reiterate our frequent comme idation of the orderly and seamanlike conduct of her ship's company — our admiration of the efficient and well disciplined condiiion of the ship — and our wishes for the futuie happiness and prosperity" of all belonging to the gallant barky.

LOSS OF THE BABatTH 'MaKIA ? WITH TwENTVeight Lives —It is with very deep concern that we thii day record the total wreck of the ' Maria' near Cape Terawiti, accompanied with a greater amount of lots of human life than haa previously happened in any similar calamity on the New Zealand coast since the colony haa been established. The infor mation on the subject aX present ia necessarily imperfect, but the fallowing, particulars, we believe, m y be relied on : — According to the account of the only surviving European, the ' Maria' left Lyttelton

on Sunday last, the 20th instant, iv cbnapany with the ' Raven' for Wellington, having on board 30 or 31 persons, two of whom were cabin passengers, the others were the officers and crew of the vessrl, and stockmen. About -1 o'clock a. m. on Wedneiday they found themselves ruuning on towards ihore, the weather being veiy thick, and the wind blowing hard on a lee shore. The vessel struck about quar ter of a mile from the shore, on the rocks ott the mouth of Makara valley ; when she struck, several of the crew cut away the quarter- boat and jumped into it, but it was immediately swamped, and they were all drowned. The vessel broke up very soon after she struck, those on board trying to save themselves by rafts and pieces of timber, but only two succeeded in reaching the shore alive — a European sailor and a Malay, who have been received into Mr. M'Namara's house, and kindly taken care of. The man who was saved was on a raft wi'h several others ; when near the breakers he jumped from the raft and advised bis companions to follow his example ; they refused to do so, and were all drowned. — The bodies of nine persons have been recovered, including those' of Captain Plank and a stockman of the name of Sole. The vessel was in ballast, having only a few casks of sperm oil on board. We believe it is intended to bring the bodies into Wellington to have them decently interred. Mr. St. Hill, the Resident Magistrate, went out yesterday to Tcrawiti, and several of the police have been sent to protect such property as may be washed og shore. When the sailor who has escaped from thwreck is in some degree recovered, further particulars will be obtained of the cause of this sad cattse trophe, which has occasioned very deep concern and sympathy for the melancholy fate of the sufferers, particularly for her unfortunate commander. — [The names of the two cabin passengers are, we learn, Mr. Wallace, and one of the Messis. Dean, of Canterbury ; both were universally respected, and are deeply regretted.]- New Zealand Spectator, July 26.
