Yachting, even upon comparatively insignificant scale, has likewise produced good colonial fruit. It is, therefore, earnestly to be hoped that here, where we are so much dependent on maritime pursuits, a taste for aquatics may be fostered and encouraged. The mite bestowed in purchase of amusement may yet return to us with incalculable interest ; and, from as small beginnings as the regatta of this day, we may be taught to strive to excel our neighbours in converting the noble materials with which our forests teem into the wooden walls of Old England.

OUR TENTH ANNIVERSARY.

t/iTn this morning's dawn, we hail the nth return of the day on which " the I\adow of the land" was conceded to the Sovereign of the Isles. Many and startng have been the vicissitudes of our infant rovince since first she was gathered — to c cowed wot cherished — beneath the Goloial wing. We shall not, now, pause to lquire how far, or how falsely the sub}ance of that land has been attempted to } tampered with : — examples of the kind aye been too widely, and too frequently lazoned in these columns to be speedily r easily forgotten. It may be that some f our vicissitudes were unavoidable ; but ■j is undeniable that more, many more, rere, and are attributable to that callous lolicy which has so long and so relentlessly xerted (and which still continues to exert) fes malign influence over every possession nrrendered to its oppressive sway. It peaks volumes for the Colony that she las survived the ordeals through which she las been made to pass, but, as she has out-lived them, and as each succeeding post from England breathes the gladsome Juope of " a good time coming," we will r||bot dim the lustre of this our Anniversal by further recalling the bitter4jaess of the trials through which we have Struggled. 1 We rejoice to find that the day is to be lime of Jubilee to our citizens ; and, that, I even at the eleventh hour, the exertions of ,| the Committee have been of so indefati i able a stamp, that the programme of a - i Regatta, of full and fair proportions, has 1 ! }een pearly and cleverly arranged. This is moving forward at the double quick in|pee<l; and we trust that the energy with which the sports of the day have been hfflfcushed, will elicit a corresponding degree |Sbf public spirit, so that The Auckland '^^Anniversary Regatta may at once strike jHroot, and acquire a reputation equal in wdegree to those of any of our neighbours Baud rival Colonies. 1 19 - The institution of regattas has, it is well 'fsknown, been of no inconsiderable advantf a a £ c *° c ro 7 a^ an^ mercantile marine of '^aGreat Britain ; the liberal inducements jjjßield out, by the nobility and gentry, to IjHttien of science to improve the characSper of pur naval architecture, have been of the most beneficial results ; [JP^d it is probably not going too far to .say jlfoat, to the nautical taste imparted by .l-Mraga-ttas, and to the desire which they imrajfiplant in the minds of ship-builders to excel :^fac Q other, and to surpass themselves, iM_k c superiority of modern shipping, whether wmP* -*«gards beauty of model, solidity of conBstruction, or capacity of stowage, is mainly ■Sr c We may point to the Messrs. nwigrams, and the Messrs.
