Au armed bandit today lipid up at the point of a revolver the crowded city branch office of the Bank of New South Wales. In a few seconds four shots were fired one by the bandit and three by employees ot the bank. It is believed the bandit was hit in the arm. Later, an unarmed detective tackled the man in a city street, and after a terrific struggle the man was stunned by a blow, from his own revolver and handeulTedHeariug shots in the bank hundreds, ot people gathered outside in quick time and several were knocked down whim Ibe bandit dashed out of the door holding one arm. , The police were told that the bandit entered the manager’s office, drew his gnu and threatened to shoot him. He then upset a desk on top of the manager who was imprisoned beneath. Holding his gun in front of him, the bandit then ran out of the office into the bank,, in which there were about 20 people, and said: “This is a stick up.' He waved his gun. covering, three toilers, but was crossed by gunfire from the employees. One shot at him from his left-hand side, another from directly in front, and a third through a counter partition. The bandit staggered back, grabbed a chair, and then faced from the bank. Sydney is at present experiencing *a crime wave. Thugs viciously bashed three victims and robbed two of them in Sydney last night. These assaults bring violent crime, including hold-ups, bashings. and assaults on women, to 18 cases in the last four weeks.
