Traffic Police Cordons
Sir, —Today we have witnessed yet another example of silly regimentation. All approaches to Aotea Quay were cordoned by traffic police, who refused admittance to the area to citizens in motorcars who desired to welcome friends in particular and returning servicemen and prisoners of war on the Andes. Only next-of-kin were admitted. The reason given was that congestion of traffic was to be avoided. What does a little congested traffic matter on such an occasion? It is far more important that people should be allowed to show their appreciation for the services these men have rendered and display delight at their safe return. These men have been fighting for freedom (sic) and come back to find that there are traffic police stationed at all points to keep people out. It is high time that these officials realized that New Zealand is not Germany under Hitlerite rule and that New Zealanders have had enough of stupid regimentation. There are far too many officials and other nonproducers in this country, and in a world that requires food they should be given a job producing things instead of pusning citizens round in this senseless way. —I am. etc..
