KAMIKAZE PLANES
Minimized By Fighter Opposition
(Received September 24. 7 p.m.) YOKOHAMA, September 23.
Two former kamikaze pilots, who are now farmers, told correspondents that, opposition from American fighter planes minimized tile kamikaze's effectiveness in the late stages of the war. They said that assignment to the corps was originally compulsory, but later it became popular to volunteer. The Kamikaze’s received the pay of ordinary pilots but were promised two grades of promotion posthumously. They sometimes returned from unsuccessful missions without disgrace, if a pilot surveyed Ihe target: and found it impossible to do Hie greatest amount of damage.
