AERO ENGINEERS’ HOUKS
The Court of Arbitration has ordered that in respect of the factories of Union Airways of New Zealand, Limited, at Mangere. Milson, Rongotai and Taieri, of Tasman Empire Airways, Limited, at Mechanics Bay and Ilobsonville, and ot Air Travel (New Zealand). Limited, at Hokitika, the limit of working hours is to be extended to 44 a week, excluding meal-times. Subject to the provisions ot the Factories Act. the hours of work in the industry are governed by an agreement under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, in which there is a clause providing tor a 44-hour s^-day week. In December, 11)43, the Court made an order under the Factories Amendment Act, 1936, covering the factories. It expired in August, and the order now made covers the period between then and the date of expiry of the agreement. March 20, which was what the employers asked in their application. The majority of the Court state that there is no evidence that conditions have materially changed since the order was made. Mr. A. L. Monteith, who dissents, states that he sees no reason why the workers covered by the order, engineers servicing aero engines, should be placed in a position different from engineers working on other classes of engines. who work a 40-hour week and thus receive overtime for work on Saturday morning.
