WELLINGTON LAW SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the 'Wellington District Law Society was held recently. The report showed that a large number of practitioners and clerks from the ■Wellington district were still serving overseas with the forces. Though at the request or the army authorities the camp free legal service had been discontinued, the society had continued to prepare wills and powers of attorney free of charge for members of the forces and, in appropriate cases, to give free legal advice. During the year a sum of £613 had been subscribed by practitioners in the city and suburbs toward the Metropolitan Patriotic Appeal. A report was made by Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell, chairman of the Post-War Aid Committee, concerning the years work on behalf of members serving with the forces and for those who had returned. The committee had maintained a close association with the university in matters such as the refresher course of lectures and war concessions concerning examinations. The Dean of the Law Faculty had been appointed a member of the committee of the society. The refresher course of lectures had been inaugurated durin"- the year and had been well attended and appreciated by returned servicemen. The purpose had been to enable practitioners to get back into tne atmosphere of law before resuming work and also to become acquainted with the changes that had taken. place m legislation during the war period.
