MORE BLOODSTOCK ARRIVES

Highly-Bred Horses For N.Z. Studs

(By

St. Simon.)

Another valuable shipment of thoroughbred stock recently reached New Zealand. The lots were purchased in England on behalf of New Zealanders by the British Bloodstock Agency, representing Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., and include some of the most highly-bred horses ever imported to the Dominion.

Son of Hyperion. The star lot was Ruthless, a bay horse foaled in 1941, bred by Lord Herby and bought on behalf of Mr. J. A. Mitchell, Santa Rosa Stud. Longburn. Ruthless is by Hyperion from Correa, by Coronach from Ranai, the dam of Watling Street, winner of the Derby, and Garden lath, the tirst filly for many years to beat the colts in the Two Thousand Guineas. Ruthless looked like a horse straight out of training when be arrived and is a typical English thoroughbred. He is to be limited to 20 outside mares in his tirst season. He is reported to be one of the highestpriced horses ever exported to this part of the world. Highly Valued. Also in the consignment was Lord Bobs, a black-pointed baj’ horse foaled in 1941 and bought on behalf of Mr. K. Austin, Inglewood Stud. North Canterbury. Lord Bobs is by Nearco from Sister Sarah by Abbots Trace from Sarita. An English report states that IO.OOOgns. was refused tor Lord Bob« before he ever raced. In his Derby trial lie won a mile race easing up by four lengths and after being well backed in the Derby he went wrong. He is a medium-sized horse, well finished, and showing plenty of quality. Son of Oaks Winner.

Another well-bred horse in the consignment was Pictavia, imported for Messrs. I’’. J. Savage an I Sons, Waimana. Pictavia its a bay horse foaled in 1942 by Nearco from Lovely Rosa by Tolgus (son of The Tetrarch). Lovely Rosa won the English Oaks. Pictavia raced only as a two-year-old and in four starts was second in the Combemere Plate, five furlongs.

To Be Raced. Mr. T. 11. Coltman, Wellington, is the owner of Fearless Flight, a chestnut filly by Fearless Fox from Fugit by Prestissimo (son of Hurry On) from Come Hither. This filly has been sent to the Alton Lodge Stud to develop and will be raced by Mr. Coltman. Fugit won nine races, and Come Hither was the dam of five winners of 15 races. The sire, Fearless Fox, was a good staying son of Foxlaw and is closely related to our sire Foxbridge, who is by Foxlaw from the same taproot as Fearless Fox. The last-named won the Ascot Vase, two miles, and Goodwood Cup, two miles and five furlongs, beating Cecil, Enfield, Quashed, Boswell, and all the best stayers of his time. For Okawa.

Bought in England in 1940 and bred from since then, Good Abbess, a chestnut mare foaled in 1938, was consigned to Mr. T. C. Lowry, Okawa. Good Abbess is by Robin Goodfellow from Buchaness by Buchan from Mellowness by Chaucer. Four Course (One Thousand Guineas), Dry Toast (City and Suburban Handicap), Weathervane (Ebor Handicap), Rosemead (sold for ll,00()gns.), and the Australian sire Valais are from the same family as Good Abbess, who was accompanied by her two-year-old colt by Sol Oriens and a foal by Foxhunter. Sol Oriens, a son of Hyperion, won the Beresford Stakes, the Irish Derby and the Waterford Plate by six furlongs, and was second in the Irish St. Leger.

Still Resting. Following High Play’s successful visit to the Wellington January meeting he suffered from an attack of colic. He has been nominated for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, but at the beginning of this week was still running on his owner’s farm at. Fairlie. He has recovered from the ailment, but is not to resume work immediately.
