HOUSE ALLOWANCE

Education Department Ruling

Some little surprise was expressed at the meeting of the Board of Governors of the Wellington ■College on Tuesday at an instruction from th c Education Department that the payment of a house allowance amounting to about £6O a year to a principal who became a widower some years ago should cease forthwith end the principal be ordered to pay back all house allowance received since the death of his wife. The amount now demanded totalled nearly £2OO. This instruction provoked adverse comments by all members of the board. Their feelings were summed up by Mr. A. E. F. 'Hefford, who said it was “unjust, unreasonable, and uncalled for.” It was pointed out that a principal had the same commitments after the death of his wife as he had before, with the added necessity of having to look after his family, and house them, without the assistance of a wife.
