EXEMPLARY SENTENCE IMPOSED

In the Supreme Court today when John Leslie I'loranee, aged 32, came before Mr, Justice Fair for sentence for breaking ami entering, aud theft, and unlawful conversion of a ear at Wanganui, counsel (Mr. Jenkins) tiimlc a plea that the prisoner be not declared, a habitual. In the dock with Floraiiec was Herbert. Lorraine Woodham, aged 27. who admitted the same offences. . On Woodham’s bcbnlt' Mr, Brmnsby said that Ihe prisoner had served two years in Ihe Middle East. While there he suffered a very harsh sentence of three years’ penal servitude from a court-martial as the result of a night’s leave in Cairo. This harshness embittered him. His Honour pointed out that the offence of the men was despicable. Floralice had been extended hospitality by Woodham’s father at ’Wanganui, and the two of them robbed Woodham senior of goods valued at .2100. When eventually they were caught Florence bad a loaded revolver under bis pillow. Florauee had a very bad record and would receive an exemplary senteni’O- four years’ imprisonment willi bard labour, ami be would also be declared a habitual. Woodham’s military service would be taken luto account. He would be sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. with hard labour.
