ALMOST CLEARED OF ENEMY
West Coast Region Of Greece (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 18. The Germans withdrawing from Greece are reported in Cairo to have reached Thebes, and the whole west coast region except Yanina is liberated. In the east, the German overland movements front Volos to Larissa continue. [Volos and Larissa were prominent in the news during the withdrawal of the Imperial forces in 194)1.1 More British troops are being landed at Athens by sea and air. An Allied communique states that further drops by parachute troops were successfully car-
ried out in the Athens area. The troops had a great welcome from the civil population. Though the main harbour installations at The Piraeus were severely damaged by German demolitions, many of the public services are functioning satisfactorily. This is due. in some cases, to successful acts of counter sabotage by Greek patriots. The port of Patras, on the Gulf of Corinth, is now open to Allied shipping, and thickly-sown minefields have been cleared, says a Rome correspondent.
