England’s “Front Line”
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 18. The King and Queen visited Dover and Folkestone today. Everywhere they had a big welcome, and the mayor of Dover told them after they had toured big cave shelters, “Thank you for having come down to see us. It will hearten everyone in the town.” The King and Queen were led by the mayor through long galleries where wire bunks three tiers high, now empty, were for so long nightly the resting place of Dover folk. It is disclosed that civilian air raid casualties in Tynemouth so far total 225 killed and 475 injured. The most serious incident ocurred when a bomb made a direct hit ou a three-story building under which there was u communal basement shelter, killing 105. Manchester's air raid casualties totalled 559 killed and .1778 injured. During the heavy- raids from December 22 to 23, 1910, 372 of the total were killed and 1236 injured. The alert for the first of these two raids lasted nearly 12 hours, and tires were still burning when the Luftwaffe returned next night.
