FIELD DAY OVER THE PHILIPPINES
Many Vehicles Destroyed (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Special Australian Correspondent.) (Received October 18, 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 18. With some American correspondents saying that the invasion of the Philippines is imminent. General MacArthur’s aircraft are stepping up their attacks on the southern section of the islands. Long-range Lightning and Thunderbolt fighters making a low-level sweep north of Valencia, in Mindanao, on Monday morning had a field day. They caught a Japanese convoy on the road and destroyed 62 trucks and six staff cars. An enemy mounted cavalry troop ‘was. dispersed with heavy casualties. Airfields in the area were strafed. Following Sunday’s big raid, Liberators were again over the Japanese oil centre of Balik Papan, in Borneo, on Monday night when they started fires. c< More than 200-'United States Corsair fighters and New Zealand Dauntless dive-bombers have attacked isolated Japanese strongpoints in the Bismarck archipelago. Kavieng, in New Ireland, and Rabaul, in New Britain, received the heaviest attacks.
