OVERSEAS TRADE Figures For August And Eight Months Overseas trade figures fdr August, ’which were released by the Customs Department yesterday, show that imports, which include defence and leud-lease supplies, continued to be heavy aud again there was a great excess of imports over exports, though the excess of imports over exports lor the eight months of this year was not as great as iu the corresponding periods of 1942 aud 1940. ' Imports in August were £12,954,000, compared with £10,823,000 iu August, 1943, an increase of £2.131,000. Exports iu August were £7,089.000. compared with £6,493,000 in August, 1943. an increase of £1,196,000. The excess of imports over ex- ‘ ports during the month was £5,265,000. compared with £4.330.000 ini the previous August, an increase of £935,000. Exports exceededsimports by £1,224,000 in August, 1942, but in each of the several previous Augusts the excess was of imports. In the eight months since January 1, imports have amounted to £68,095,000, compared with £61,416,000 in the corresponding eight months of last year, an increase of £3,679,000. Exports were £48,993,000. compared with £45,633,000 last year, an increase of £3,360,000. The excess of imports over exports in the eight months of this year has been £19,102,000, compared with £18,783,000 in the first right months of 1943, an increase of £319,The figures for the first eight months of each of the last six years are as follows:—

A record surplus of £273,172, after making full provision for outstanding losses and taxation, is shown in the accounts of the South British Insurance Company for the year ended August 31. The net premium income totals £2,612,011. Also a record is another revenue item, interest and rents, which total £176,489. With £264,616 brought forward, there is £714,276 available. The directors have allocated £200,000 to the investment fluctuation fund and contingencies reserve, leaving £514,277.
