AIR FORCE ROLE
New Far Eastern Chief Sums Up
(British Official Wireless.) (Received October 17, 7 p.m.) RUGBY, October 16. “The Allied armies in the west would not be where they are today but for the efforts of the Allied air forces. Air supremacy was au absolute prerequisite of this operation.” Air Chief Alarsbal Sir Trafford Leigh-Alallory, who is relinquishing the post of commander-in-chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force to become Air Chief in South-east Asia, thus summed up today the work of the air force in western Europe since the invasion of France began. He paid an enthusiastic tribute to the force’s varied nationalities under his command, and also to the auxiliary units, such as airfield construction units, radar units, and supply columns. As a result of all their efforts, be concluded, the result bad been that we had been able to apply overwhelming airpower to reduce the enemy both in the air and on the ground—a factor which paved the way for our longed-for victory.
