RUSSIANS SMASHING RIGA POCKET
LONDON, October 16. The Russians south-west and west of liberated Riga today occupied a number of places, including three railway stations, Moscow reports. West of Riga they drove the Germans from several strongly-fortified places on the southern shore of Lake Babit, and south-west of Riga advanced 12 miles, smashing all German attempts to make a stand on intermediate lines. “Our troops are now breaking into the enemy’s rear, and engaging his forces,” the communique adds. Violent battles in the sector, north ot Warsaw are reported by the German news agency. The Russians are stated to have thrown in seven rifle divisions and a whole series of tank formations against the German line between the Vistula and the Bug.
