MAYOR IN SACKCLOTH
Five months ago. North Sydney defeated Canterbury, Sydney, in a First Victory Loan challenge. Later, the mayor of Canterbury, Aiderman S. A. Parry, paid his bet on the result by wearing sackcloth at a complimentary dinner given by his council and war loan committee to their North Sydney rivals. He made his sackcloth suit himself out of chaff bags and his head was anointed with ashes. The two suburbs have another bet ou the present Victory Loan quota. Aiderman Parry has again challenged North Sydney, the losing mayor to eat dinner on liis town hall stops and sweep the footpath in short pants.
