WARSAW SITUATION SERIOUS

Battle Of Attrition LONDON, October 1. The battle for Warsaw has become one of attrition. Both sides are throwing in more and more forces. The Polish home army is engaged iu heavy fighting in the centre of Warsaw, aud the latest communique from the commander of the Polish home army. General Bor, says the situation remains serious. General Bor says the patriot forces have lost communication with Zoliboruz suburb where a heavy German counterattack was reported yesterday. The Germans today claim that resistance iu the suburb has ended.

Polish forces in the Dampinow Forest, just outside Warsaw, are being pushed westward by strong German formations which have been concentrating there after having been pulled back across the .Vistula.

Baltic Army Remnants

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 1. A Moscow message says that the Germans evacuated from Finland are making a desperate last stand with the remnants of their Baltic army on the Estonian islands of Hiuma and Sarema above the Gulf of Riga. German units were among the prisoners on the smaller island of Muhu, which was liberated by a Soviet Estouian corps operatingbn General Govorov’s front yesterday. The Germans were surprised at the speed at Which Estouian cutters crossed the fivo-mile straits and at the storming of the steeply-sloping coast. The Germans were either wiped out or surrendered. The Germans in Riga, who are besieged from three fjides. continue their, fierce resistance, but the Russians are closing in their arc round the city.
