A large five-to-seven reception in honour of the United States Minister to New Zealand, Mr. Kenneth S. Patton, and Mrs. Patton, was given in Wellington last evening by Colonel J. H. Naukivell, United States Military Attache, Major Paul C. Jackson, United States Military Air Attache, and Lieutenant G. B Lane, acting United States Naval Attache. JUe E.S.U. rooms were crowded, there being approximately 000 guests. CThey wsre welcomed on arrival by Colonel Nankivell, Major Jackson, and Lieutenant Lane, and at the same time were able to greet Mr. and Mrs. Patton, who stood in the receiving line. Those present included Cabinet .Ministers and Government officials, Supreme' Court judges, Consuls, High Commissioners, and high ranking officers of the Navy, Armv and Air Force, the mayor and mayoress of Wellington, and prominent citizens. There was a good sprinkling of uniforms among the men guests, and several ->< the women present were also in uniform. Black appeared to rank high in feminine favour, a number wearing this colour with touches of white or of sequins, otfen with silver fox furs as accessories. Mrs. Patton wore a simple black ensemble, elbow gloves of petunia suede, and a cluster of blooms of the same shade on the bodice, providing a vivid contrast. The floral decorations were carried out in almost the same eyecatching colour, being allied with white flowers for the low table bowls. A string orchestra provided delightful music throughout, though at times this was all but lost among the pleasant buzz of conversation which filled the room.
