NEW AIR LANDING IN GERMAN REAR
Reports From Berlin LONDON, September 2(1. A German high command announcement, quoted by Berlin radio, says: "Allied paratroops have landed in our rear in central Holland and are making our offensive operations more difficult, but German tactical reserves were thrown in against these newly-landed troops, and either sealed them off or annihilated them.” The German news agency, quoting an official survey of the battle fronts, stated : "The remnants of the First British Airborne Division, squeezed into a very narrow space at Arnhem, are still offering stubborn resistance, but the area has been further smashed by concentric German artillery fire.” Earlier the news agency claimed that this division bad be.eu "completely liquidated.” The news agency said that the last remnants of 600 men surrendered this morning in a small village west of Arnhem, and added that the British previously surrendered all the wounded, numbering 1400. The high command spokesman. General Dietmar, said tonight: “The triumphant cries in the camp of our western enemies are not without a justifiable background in the past few weeks, but the war situation has undergone a thorough change. The British and American command, in spite of the hopeful position in August, has failed to split the German front.”
