PRONUNCIATION TEST

Wellington Competitions PIANO SCHOLARSHIP ' A test of a kind that interests, or should interest, everybody who speaks the English language, a pronunciatiou test, was among the events at yesterday’s sessions of the Wellington competitions festival. This was,a competition for children between 12 and 16 years. The adjudicator, Mr. W. Russell-Wood, asked the 22 entrants to read aloud the following words: —Adverse, anecdote, benevolent, curator, decadent, fatigue, forehead, formidable, gross, homage, incendiary, infamous, incomparable, Jocund, khaki, lineage, miniature, orchestra, particularly, preferable, qualm, recipe, sloth, subtle, tyranny, victuals. ■ Two of them pronounced only one word wrongly, and they were asked to say: gnu, desuetude, zebra, acme, mulcted, mulched and accoutrements. This resulted in Elizabeth Hogg being, first and Paul McLeod second. A similar test for adults is to be held later. After awarding . the Bcjfe’s piano scholarship to Barrie Dentil/-, Mr. Ernest Empson remarked that there had been some fine performances, and the large entries, 39, indicated increased interest iu music. Particularly encouraging was the playiug of the youths. The winner had given an inspiring, rhythmic and technically efficient performance of Chopin’s polonaise. He had the fire for concert playing. The performer placed second was not so convincing, when recalled as he had been in the preliminary. Commenting on the junior national song, Mr. J! Leech, who judged it, said that a fault that was too prominent was alteration of the text. No person had the right to mutilate classic poetry, and if a singer found its arrangement as a song too difficult he should change his song. This afternoon the first, demonstration matinee will be held at the Town Hall. At the same time there will be contests in the Concert Chamber and the Oddfellows’ Hall. This morning all three halls will be used for judging, and the programme at night will be the same as usua, a concert in the main hall and senior classes in the Concert Chamber and Oddfellows’ Hall.
