DISHONEST POSTMAN
Gilbert Dlewellyn Henderson, P°s t!l l messenger, aged 25, pleaded guilty in tin Magistrates’ Court. Wellington, yesteidaj, to four charges of theft of postal packages, of a total value of. £5/2/6. lhe packages principally contained cigarettes, 1800 of which were stolen Detective-Sergeant .T. Ihompson said accused had been employed since 1913 in the parcels branch of the Clnci Post Office, and it was his duty to prepare parcels for sorting. He luid stolen the cigarettes, and sold them for la/- a carton He had also taken a parcel containing socks and a pullover, which liau been posted from Scotland to a seaman in New Zealand. These had been found at accused's house. Of the articles stolen £2/10/- wortli had been recovered. Mr F. W. Ongley, in making a plea for leniency, said that accused had been unable to live on tbe wages he was receivJn .Mr. Stout, S.M., admitted accused to pro. bation for two years, on condition that he makes restitution of £2, and ordered that tlie goods, recovered should be restored to the Post and Telegraph Department.
