RELIGIOUS NOTICES. CURISTADELPIIIAN LECTURE (God Willing), T.0.0.F. HALL, ALLEN STREET (Opp. Paramount, Courtenay Place), SUNDAY AT 7 P.M. Subject: "THE SACRIFICIAL DEATH OF CHRIST." WHY AND FOR WHOM DID-CHRIST DIE,? WHY DID CHRIST DIE? Jesus Christ was a sinless man (Heus. 4:15, II Car. 5:21, I Peter 2:22, I John ' 3:5, I Peter 1:19) and yet He bad to die, indeed the Scriptures declare that "It pleased God to bruise Him” (Isa. 53:1u)Wliy? Because Christ “came in the flesh” (II John 7, I John 4:3), was a partaker of “flesh and blood” (Hebs. 2: 14-16) inheriting from Mary (His mother) Adam’s condemned physical nature—a “body ot sin” (Roms. 6:6, Phil. 3:21, Roms. 7:18). "This corruptible,” “This mortal ”(! Cor. 15:53). Therefore When Jesus died, as He 'had committed no transgression, He died because the physical nature He possessed was a physical nature upon which God had passed condemnation —because of its inherent sinfulness, as a result of God’s sentence upon it, it was j'ust and righteous that a-bearer of it (although Himself sinless) should die (Roms. 5:12). Thus God righteously “condemned sin in the flesh” (Roms. B:3)—the devil (the real devil), was destroyed (Hebs. 2,:14) —Christ, “put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hobs. 9:26). FOR WHOM DID CHRIST DIE? “Jesus Christ became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that “OBEY HIM" (Hebs. 5:9, John 10:27-28). This means that Christ died for those only who “OBEY HIM.” The first act of obedience after belief of the Gospel is baptism, i.e., immersion in water (Mark 16:15-16, Acts 8:38, Acts 18:8). Thereby the believer acknowledges the principles underlying the sacrifice of Christ and identifies himself witlj that sacrifice by submitting to a symbolical death (baptism), Roms. 6:3-6;, Cols. 2:12. He is then “justified by faith” (Roms. 3:28) is no longer “in Adam” but “in Christ” Gals. 3:27-29) and if thereafter he “shows bis faith by his works” (James 2:17-26) ho can live “in hope of eternal life” (Titus 1:2) at the second coming of Christ (II Tim. 4:7-8).
