PETAIN’S FAREWELL MESSAGE
LONDON. August 24. The Germans, who have taken Marshal Petain to Germany, declare that he will be treated “like King Leopold," says the “Daily Express” Berne correspondent. _ The Germans allowed Marshal Petain Io publish a farewell to the French people in which he declared he was no longer free and claiming that he had always acted in the best interests of France. Petain said that though his actions might sometimes have appeared strange, “they hurt me more than they hurt you.” Sweden has officially broken off her relations with the Vichy Government.
