£2174 COLLECTED
Sick And Wounded Appeal
More than £2174, with additional amounts yet to come in, was conlributed in Wellington yesterday in response to the Sick and Wounded Appeal. The chairman of the Wellington provincial committee of the Order of St. John and New Zealand Red Cross Society, Sir'James Elliott, last night expressed the committee’s “sincere appreciation of the excellent response to the appeal.” The opportunity, he said, had been taken by citizens to give thanks for the wonderful news from France,' and the capitulation of Rumania. He also thanked the groups of public-spirited women who worked arduously for the cause. “The parade and public celebration of the splendid news received from the battlefront will give encouragement and added urge to those engaged in humanitarian work on behalf of our sick and wounded,” he said. He also thanked the many joint committees operating in the Wellington metropolitan area, the city of Lower Hutt, Petone and Upper Hutt boroughs, and the Hutt and Makara counties for their efforts to raise the quota of £25,000.
