MARCH TOGETHER

British And French Nations

(British Official Wireless.) (Received August 24, 7 p.m.) RUGBY, August 23. M. Rene Massigli, the French National Commissioner of Foreign Affairs, was the guest of honour at a dinner in Loudon tonight at which the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, said: “Every citizen of a free land must have been deeply moved by the news reaching us from Paris today. True to her traditions, the great capital city has herself risen to throw off the tyrants’ yoke. The full story of the heroism of the last few days has yet to be told, but it is already clear that spontaneous resistance has. been maintained against heavy odds in the heart of Paris. “I believe unshakably that the fortunes of our countries are linked. Our two peoples march together,” Mr. Edcu concluded. “The spirit of France has never died, and soon she will be free to lead her life again and make her own individual, unmatched contribution to the future of mankind." M. Massigli, in reply, said: ‘On the day which sees the liberation of Paris, at the moment when the liberation of the whole of France and then of Europe is near, our thoughts go back to the country and to the man without whose tenacity and heroism there would be no possibility of liberation for France, or for Europe, or, perhaps, for the world. It was neither at El Alamein nor.at Stalingrad that there began the series of victories of which we see today the wonderful results. No Frenchman will ever forget that it. all began with the Battle of Britain. Without that battle fought over the skies of England just four years ago there would have been no battle fought yesterday outside Sainte Chapelle.”
