Retirement Announced

CONSEQUENT PROMOTIONS

The retirement on superannuation of the chief engineer of railways, Mr. G. J. Bcrtinshaw, A.M.Inst.C.E., after .40 years’ service, and consequent appointments were announced last night by the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple. Mr. Bertinshaw joined the railways as a drafting cadet in the chief engineer’s office, Wellington, and after periods of duty in the district offices at nanganui, Wellington, and Invercargill, received his appointment as district engineer in charge of the Wanganui district ?n Fouruary, 1924. He was promoted inspecting engineer in December,. IJ/o, and assistant chief engineer ir. November, 1931. Since June, he has held the position of chief engineer. In expressing appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Mr. Bertinshaw, the Minister referred particularly to the past five years of war, throughout the trying and difficult conditions of which Mr. Bertinshaw’s experience, resourcefulness, and practicability had been conspicuous in the successful handling of his many j.M.totc.E., M.N.Z.1.E., for the last eight years assistant chief engineer, has been appointed chief engineer, and wid take up his new duties on September 1. Mr. A. tl. Murison, A.M.Inst.CC.E., inspecting engineer, is being promoted assistant cniet engineer. , . , r To fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Murison’s appointment, Mr. li. D. r. Smith, A.M.Inst.C.E., . M.N.Z.1.E., district engineer, Wellington, and Mi. G. M. Beck, A.M.Inst.C.E, district engineer. Invercargill, are being appointed inspecting engineers.
