N.Z. BORN VIOLINIST

SYDNEY, August 23. A young New Zealand-born violinist, Miss Claire Simpson, aged 20, has been granted a scholarship to the Curtis In*, stitutc of Music, in Philadelphia. A Ib-year-old Adelaide pianist, Miss Allison Nelson, has also been granted a scholarship to the Curtis Institute. Both scliol" arships were awarded on the recommendation of the visiting American conductor, Mr. Eugene Ormoudy. Six years ago Miss Simpson won a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Her teacher, Mr. Florent Iloogstoel, said: “Claire is the outstanding violin student in the history of the Sydney Conservatorium. When she began studying with me six years ago 1 knew she had a great future.” Miss Simpson, who has given many broadcasts and public recitals in Sydney, is a daughter of Mr. Frederick Simpson, war correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Commission.
