DAWSON’S FINE WIN Wellington Snooker Title
A large crowd watched the final of the 1944 Wellington amateur snooker championship last night, which resulted in a win for S. Dawson (Comm. Trav. Club), from W. Davies (Lower Hutt), in three straight games, 44-31, 72-36, 57-22. Potting was a feature of the games throughout rather than safety, and consequently the decision was quickly reached. It was Dawson’s first championship success and a promising effort as it was only his second tourney. His form improved as the championship advanced, some of his potting in the final being excellent. At the conclusion, Mr. J. Sharp,, of the Wellington Billiards Association, made presentations of trophies to tbe Commercial Travellers’ Club and both finalists, also to L. Blackaby, who held the highest break. Sergeant-Major J. Meldrum was commended by the players and officials for his splendid control throughout. The conditions provided for the games also drew eulogistic reference from the contestants. Next Monday the annual B grade billiards championship begins, the earlier schedule being as follows: Monday, 7 p.m., D. (Bryce v. E. L. Elvy; 8 p.m., B. W. J. Marrls v. H. C.
