OIL PLANTS BOMBED
Stronger Defence Belt
RUGBY. August 22.
Up to 750 heavy bombers attacking synthetic oil plants in Silesia and natural oil works near Vienna encountered a considerable number of enemy aircraft, for the first time since August I. says a Rome correspondent. Heavy battles went on in the Vienna and Budapest defence belt, and Allied Liberators and escorting Mustangs and Lightnings scored a number of victories. Fortresses ami Liberators attacking the northern targets reported-only a few encounters. Their objectives were protected by a smoke-screen and the bombing was done by instruments. At the Odertal synthetic refinery. SO miles from Breslau. some Fortresses reported good visual bombing. The Liberators reported fires at Lobau, seven miles from Vienna. The natural oil refinery at Koneuberg, five miles north of Vienna, was bombed by other Liberators, and fires and explosions resulted.
