Military Decorations
Sr, —The leading article in today’s “Dominion” dealing with General Montgomery’s inspiring message to the troops recalls another general's comments at the end of the Gallipoli campaign. You state: “It is characteristic of General Montgomery that he has awarded the merits of the fighting without distinction of corps or individuals.” General Sir A. H. Russell commanded the N.Z. Mounted Rifles Brigade on Gallipoli, and, when asked at the end of the campaign why no man in the brigade had been awarded a decoration, he was reported as replying:. “They all fought well. If I had recommended one man tor a decoration, I would have had to recommend the lot.” Incidentally, practically the whole of the original brigade were either killed or wounded. Many soldiers, past and present, will agree that there is much to be said for these two famous generals’ point of view.—l am, etc., TROOPER. ' Wellington, August 23.
