SOPRANO TEST

Wellington Competitions ENGLISH FOLK SONG Two senior vocal tests which always rouse great interest at the Wellington competitions, the soprano test and the women’s English folk soug, were decided last night. In both, preliminaries had been held the previous night and recalled competitors were heard again last night. The judge, Mr. J. Leech, said he could be justly enthusiastic over the beauty of vocal equipment of the sopranos generally. Tone was refreshing and there was a fluid and easy movement over the florid passages of the test piece, “Serenade.” It was a difficult song, but there were good amorous interpretations, and the accompanists had helped to make it really a serenade. The winner of the folk song was Mrs. Eileen Williams, Christchurch. Thg 27-competitors in the society s senior elocution scholarship were heard by the adjudicator, Mr. ML RussellWood, last night, each reciting Grantchester” (Rupert Brooke), and a piece of his or her own selection. The recalls were Miss Beverley Burke, Wellington, Mr. Donald Gandell. Karon, and Miss Colleen Walling, Kelburn. They will be judged finally at the Town Hall tonight. Mr. Ernest Empson was occupied from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. with the 22 compete tors in the chief piano solo, in which each had to play “Lotus Land” (Scott) and a composition of his or her own selection. He recalled Miss Loretto Cunninghamc, whose selection was “Toccata” (Debussy), and Miss Margaret Proudfoot, whose selection was “Polichiuelle” (Rachmaninoff). The competitor placed third was Miss Jean McLaglan, Masterton, who played “En Automue” (Moskowski). Misses Cunninghame and Proudfoot wil be judged finally on Sat urday night. More than usual enthusiasm was displayed by the audience gathered to hear these amateur pianists. Nineteen of them were women, and three men.
