Warnings Ip Australian manufacturers not Io be complacent about the standard of Australian products, and to bo prepared for fierce post-war competition, have been given by the chairman of directors of Bonds Industries. Air. W. Hermon Slade. Mr. Slade announced that the big British textile and rayon manufacturers, Cortaulds. were prepared to spend £5,900.000 to establish a factory in Australia to make rayon yarns. This factory, lip said, would employ 5000 workers directly. and nt least an equal number indirectly. and would be one of the largest industrial concerns in the Commonwealth. The new factory is distinct from that Io be estabished nt Newcastle, nt which combined Australian and American interests will manufacture rayon fabrics. Commenting on these undertakings. Mr. .1. P. Abbott. M.H.R.. said the Government was permitting overseas rayon interests Io undermine Australian woollen manufacture. It should encourage the manufacture of the highest grade of woollen materials-. not of competitive fabrics.
