OPIUM OFFENCES
Raid In Haining Street CHINESE FINED £260 As the sequel to a raid made by Defeetves E. 11. Compton and G. E. Callaghan on No. 1 Haining Street, on Saturday night, 10 Chinese appeared before Vlr. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates Court, Wellington, yeslerday and were convicted and fined a total of £-.60 tor breaches of the law relating to the possession and smoking of opium. Detective-Sergeant J- llinnipson said that the detectives found the whole premises set up for the smoking of opium. Tong, the proprietor, had been previously convicted of keeping premises, lor the smoking of opium. All accused pleaded guilty . Charlie Tong was lined £!00 for being the proprietor of premises 'J. . C smoking of opium. Ah . K ""h for being found in possession of prep, red opium, was fined £XO, and Ah laundrymaii, and Ching n ° llg ’ ‘‘ UU^. '' h ' man, for a similar offence, were each lined £25. For being. 1 lawful excuse on premises be n use for the purpose of smoking opn n A' l Wong, Lee Yec, Joe Vum, Ng<i'i Jac , ami Tong Lee were lined Ll2 each.
