PURCHASE OF TERRY

TOWELS Retailers’ Statement Regret that the retail trade, was not consulted before the placing of Government orders for the purchase of American terry towels and tea towels is expressed in a statement by the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation. Had this been done, it is said, this quantity of white towels would not have 'been ordered, but an endeavour would have been made to secure a similar quantity of coloured towels, which were so much in demand. “Despite Ministerial statements to the contrary, definite proof has been submitted of the availability of coloured towels from time to time from the United Kingdom. It is hoped, therefore, that when these white towels are off the market, licences will be granted for the importation of coloured towels from the United Kingdom. “Further, had the trade been consulted the tea towels would not have been bought as there did not exist an acute shortage of tea towels. If it was necessary to take tea towels in order to secure terry towels, then had the retail trade been consulted, better quality tea towels and more suitable sizes would have been recommended.”
