The New Zealand Cup candidate, Bronze Engle, recorded the fast time ot 4.17 W win the National Handicap, the principal event on the opening day of tile Eew Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club s August meeting at Addington yesterday. He prevailed in a hard finish with Parrish Lad. a former Aucklander now in C. >S. Donaui s team, these two finishing well clear ot tue field with the favourite, .loan Conquest, falling after being prominent to the Ronald Logan was the longest-priced winner of the das' when he scored in a keen contest for the Lightning Handicap. Ho was one of three winners driven by J. BPringle. , . .„ Casabianca and Fantom made a twohor.se race of the Addington Trotting Stakes, Casabianca winning narrowly. 1 lie much-boomed Blue Horizon started on. the same mark as Fantom, but never looked likely to take part in tiie finish. The other feature event, the Three-year-old Stakes, went to the Sapling Stakes winner Slavonic, who battled on gamely In the straight to win in a close finish. There was a spectacular smash in the Queen Mary Handicap when Clarcmorris fell and brought down Gallant Chief and Imperial Lady, while Southland was also involved in the accident and lost his driver. G. B. Noble, driver of Gallant Chief, broke a small bone in an arm and could not fulfil his remaining engagements. The weather was fine but overcast, and the track was in good order. The totalizator handled £117,706/10/-, compared with £101,735/10/- last year. Knave of Diamonds and Scott Axwortliy were the early leaders in the Introductory Handicap, but the favourite. Karangi, took over six furlongs from home, and alter shaking off Pre-eminence along the back he dealt with a later challenge from Scottish Lady and beat her comfortably, with •Scottish Emperor and Knave of Diamonds best of the other®. Paul Collette and Seaborn lost a lot of ground nt the start. Imperial Lady, Festivity, Manpower, Poker Face and Clarcmorris were the leaders when the field settled down in the Queen Mary Handicap, but it was not long before Poker Face took over. Inside the final half-mile Poker Face broke up and Interfered with Imperial Lady. Loyal King then took charge from Claremorrls, Recluse, Festivity, Gallant Chief and Watcher. Once heads were turned for home the race developed into a contest between Loyal King and Watcher. Loyal King getting the verdict by a head. Recluse was four lengths back third and Festivity fourth. Casabianca led all the way to win the Addington Trotting Stakes, but Fantom made a splendid effort to give him CO yards. It was actually a two-horse race, Fantom making up her handicap rapidly and putting Casabianca to the test throughout the entire journey. Once they turned for home these two fought out a thrilling duel, Casabianca winning by a neck. Desmond’s Pride, who beat the others, was 20 lengths away third and Blue Horizon, who did not look his best, was a poor fourth after breaking several times in the first mile. Running in tenth place with a round to go, [Bronze Eagle put in a dazzling burst of speed along the back straight the last time ip the National Handicap to join issue with the pacemaker, Parrish Lad, with .loan 'Conquest, Special Edition, Gold Pot, Battle Colours and Lightning Lady rtl«o in handy positions. In the run home Bronze Eagle and Parrish Lad drew away from the field, and after a desperate tussle Bronze Eagle took the honours by a head. After a big gap came 'Battle Colours in third place, with Lightning Lady, Special Edition and Shadow Maid next. Gold Bar made the early pace for the first mile and a quarter, and probably cost Parrish Lad the race, ns the last-named was keen to keep the pacemaker within reach. Joan Conquest compounded at the home turn after being nicely placed. The race was run at a solid pace, the first mile and a half in 3.10 and the full distance in 4.17, Bronze Eagle running his last half-mile In 59. Cabin Boy, who moved short in his preliminary and was lame after the race, won the Advance Handicap in decisive ,style, though his margin was only a length over the favourite, Trusty Scott, who received a check at. a crucial stage of the race which cost him a few lengths. Trusty Scott, Jack’s Pal, Gold Flight and Dianus were in front of Cabin Boy at the home turn, but the Washdyke representative finished solidly to win by a length from Trusty Scott witli three lengths to Gold Flight, then Dianus and Safety Pin. Rangefinder came with a solid run in the straight to win the Avon Handicap from Douglas MeElwyn and Manian. Lady Scott, Mervyn Derby and Manian attended to the pacemaking for a mile and a half from Bomber. Rangefinder, Douglas MeElwyn and Royal Worthy. Along the back tile last time Lady Scott broko and Mervyn Derby tired. Rangetinder then going to the front with Douglas MeElwyn, Iranian and Royal Worthy in hot pursuit. Over the last furlong Rangefinder and Douglas MeElwyn made' it a twohorse finish. Rangefinder doing best to win by a length. There was a gap to Manian, and Royal Worthy was a close fourth. Royal Worthy had a sulky wheel damaged in a collision at tho end of a furlong so his effort was a good one. Will Cary and Millisle lost their chances through breaking. There was a spectacular finish for the Canterbury Stakes for three-year-olds, the favourite, Slavonic, making up ground from the half-mile to force his way through near the post and win by a head. Khamsin was first away, but at the end of a furlong Lady Spray took over and sho made the pace for the remainder of tiie journey. Site led at the half-mile from Worthy Gold, Khamsin, Admiration, Jack’s Son,' Air Marshal and Slavonic. Lady Sprav led for lionie from M ortiiy Gohl, Jack’s Son, Jackie Guy and Slavonic. and in a driving finish Slavonic got through to win by half a head from Worthy Gold witli a bead to Jack’s Son. Lady Sprav was a close fourth and Jackie Guv" was fifth. Czardas broke up at tho start and lost a lot of ground. Ronald Logan made a brilliant run in tho last three furlongs to win the Lightning Handicap. Dusky Sound led for half a mile, but witli a round to go his stablemate, Fine Art. dashed into the lead and he led down tho back from Dusky Sound, Trustv Scott, Lightning Lady, Coquette, Integrity, Countless and Ronald Logan. Fine Art led Dusky Sound into the straight, but with a brilliant run Ronald Logan got up to head Fine Art on the post. Dusky Sound was two lengths away third and Countless was fourth, then Integrity and Lightning Lady. More patiently driven, Fine Art probably would have won.
