Go-Slow Machine Shops (Received August 20, 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 20. President Roosevelt has ordered the Navy Department to take over and operate 99 machine sops in San Francisco area where an overtime dispute reduced the output. This action followed the seizure of five machine shops in the same area on Tuesday, when the Machinists’ Union banned work exceeding eight hours a day or 48 a week, defying the WaiLabour Board. President Roosevelt is trying, to remove serious lags in production in some vital war materials, says the New York “Herald Tribune’s’’ Washington correspondent. He has ordered Mr. Wilson, acting chairman of the War Production Board, to step up the production of radar, heavy artillery and other equipment. The President’s action, taken so soon after his return from his Pacific inspection, is believed to be the outcome of Ins own observations during his tour as well as sobering reports on shortages given him by the Pacific commanders and also by Genera] Marshall. the Army chief of staff, who conferred with him on Thursday.
